Richard L. Garrett

Richard L. Garrett, 74, passed away from mesothelioma Sept. 22, at VNA Inpatient Hospice.

He was born Aug. 21, 1943, in New Castle, the son of the late Irene Garrett and Donald Garrett, both of New Wilmington.

Dick was a member of Community Alliance Church and was a founding member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in America.

After graduation from Wilmington High School in 1961 and many years of work on the family farm, Dick worked at Butler Armco, now AK Steel, from 1966 to 2002 in the melt shop and continuous caster where he was known as Dutch.

After his retirement and a short break, he worked in the dairy section at the Butler Walmart from its opening in Butler Commons until November of 2016.

His family, fishing and the Outer Banks were his passions, as well as mission work projects with the church.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 53 years, Jean Garrett; three children, Bradley (Lisa) Garrett of Laurel, Md., Jennifer (Steve) Goettler of Butler, and Mark (Connie) Garrett of Oakland, Mich.; 12 grandchildren, David Goettler, Kathryn Garrett, Jessica (Anthony) Blumling, Matthew Goettler, Amanda Amigh, Margaret Goettler, Luisa Garrett, Laura Beth Goettler, Megan Goettler, Gideon Goettler, Anna Goettler and Ella Goettler; two great grandchildren, Jackson Blumling and Ryker Blumling; one brother, Charles (Norma) Garrett of New Wilmington; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Jean Blake, Lawrence Garrett, Russell Garrett and Carol Kimbler.

GARRETT — A memorial service for Richard L. Garrett, who died Friday, Sept. 22, 2017, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Community Alliance Church, 800 Mercer Road, Butler, with Pastor Bob Thomas, officiating.In lieu of visitation, there will be a reception with the family immediately following the service.If desired, memorial donations may be made to Seneca Hills Bible Conference, 276 Damascus Road, Polk, PA 16342.Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E.
