Parents sue Butler Memorial over death of son
The parents of a one-time pitcher for the Butler Blue Sox are suing Butler Memorial Hospital, alleging the man received negligent care following a 2013 car crash that ultimately caused his death a month later.
The parents of Andrew Revello, 22, claim an emergency room physician and nurse practitioner should have tested him further, diagnosed his problems and admitted him to the hospital.
Instead, the lawsuit alleges, the hospital released Revello within three hours of his arrival, having given him only a pelvic X-ray.
Carol and Michael Revello of Highland Heights, Ohio, have filed the lawsuit, which seeks an unspecified amount of money, in United States District Court in Pittsburgh.
According to the suit, the allegations stem from a head-on vehicle collision at Route 8 and Litman Road on June 1, 2013.
According to the lawsuit, Revello, a driver, was taken to the hospital by ambulance with complaints of back and hip pain. After X-rays were taken, Revello was released with instructions to visit his own doctor in seven to 10 days if his symptoms persisted.
But instead, the next day Revello was taken to the emergency room at The Cleveland Clinic Health System, Hillcrest Hospital, with the same complaints, according to the lawsuit.
That hospital diagnosed Revello with vertebral fractures of the lumbar spine and a perforated colon. Additionally, the hospital diagnosed him with sepsis, fecal peritonitis and pneuperitoneum. Revello remained hospitalized until his death on July 10.
According to the lawsuit, an autopsy was done by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner and Revello’s cause of death was determined to be “severe sepsis with multisystem organ failure due to blunt force impacts to the chest and abdomen, with skeletal and visceral injuries from an automobile accident.”
Revello’s attorney, Aaron Berg of Ohio, declined to comment.
A spokesman for the hospital said the policy is not to comment on matters under litigation.
