Police: Traffic stop yields 8+ bricks and other drugs
An active arrest warrant led city police to a stash of nearly 450 stamp bags of suspected heroin or fentanyl and more than two ounces of suspected crack cocaine.
Police arrested David C. Bemben, 40, on Thursday night. He was arraigned Friday morning by District Judge Sue Haggerty on two felony counts of drug sales, two misdemeanor counts of drug possession and one misdemeanor count of drug paraphernalia possession.
Bemben was sent to Butler County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bond. Court records show Bemben has been unable to post bond, and it is unclear if he has other bond conditions attached to his arrest warrant.
According to charging documents, police became interested in a vehicle that was traveling on the 200 block of Cleveland Avenue, and when they ran the license plate in their database, it showed the registered owner, Jeffrey D. Hay Sr., 59, of Butler, had a warrant for his arrest.
Court records show Hay was charged Feb. 14 with felony retail theft and has yet to be arrested and arraigned on the charge.
When police pulled the vehicle over, they found Bemben behind the wheel.
“I immediately recognized the operator of the vehicle as David Bemben, who I knew to be the subject of an active arrest warrant through the Butler County Sheriff’s Office,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit.
After a review of court records, the reason for the Bemben’s arrest warrant was unclear.
During a search of Bemben’s clothes and body, police found a small bag of suspected crack cocaine, a smoking device, a cellphone and cash.
“With the driver’s side door hanging open during the arrest, I clearly observed a soft drink bottle with a black mouthpiece affixed onto the top,” police said. “Additionally, there was a pack of cigarettes in the door pocket next to the paraphernalia containing multiple bundles (packs of 10 stamp bags) of suspected heroin or fentanyl.“
Police said later at the station they found four more stamp bags of suspected heroin or fentanyl during a more thorough search of Bemben’s body and clothes. Police then requested a warrant to search the vehicle.
In the vehicle, police said they found various amounts of suspected crack cocaine, suspected heroin or fentanyl and drug paraphernalia.
Officers reported finding a combined 445 full stamp bags of suspected heroin or fentanyl, which is almost nine bricks, and 65.12 grams of suspected crack cocaine, which is more than two ounces.
“A digital scale, packaging materials and $661 in U.S. currency were also recovered,” police said.
A date for Bemben’s preliminary hearing was not available as of late Sunday evening.
