Land acquisition will extend trail

File Photo.

Armstrong Trails and the Armstrong County commissioners announced they have obtained funding to acquire a 14-mile rail corridor and bridge that will extend the Armstrong Trail from 36 to more than 50 miles.

The section of former railway is just east of Butler County’s south east corner.

The funding source is the Southwest Pennsylvania Commission.

When the new acquisition is ready for public use, it will allow hikers, joggers and cyclists to access Freeport and Leechburg from Ford City in Armstrong County, which is Butler County’s neighbor to the east.

Chris Ziegler, executive director of Allegheny Trails, said adding the stretch of trail will benefit towns along the trail as area residents use the trail.
