Preschoolers turn out for prom
BUTLER TWP — Complete with music, food and tiny boutonnieres and corsages, the first kiddie prom went off without a hitch Tuesday night.
Parents and children dressed to impress for the event, which was held in celebration of the preschool students’ impending graduation.
Joyce Dunlap, teacher and organizer of the event, said the evening was inspired by her students at Kiddie City, 330 Whitestown Road.
“The kids said that we should have a prom, so we did it,” she said. “It took about six weeks to prepare.”
Dancing, face painting and a magician kept the 34 students excited and active throughout the night. Children dragged their parents onto the dance floor and chatted with friends about the picture booth and face-painting options.
“I’m excited about the chocolate fountain,” said 5-year-old Brinley Moore, who added that she’s graduating from preschool next week.
CJ Counts attended the dance with his 4-year-old daughter, Grace, who also will enter kindergarten in the coming year.
“I liked getting to come with her and dance with her,” he said. “I’m excited for her to have this experience and see her socialize with all her friends. And I like to cut a rug.”
Nichole Moore, Brinley’s mom, said she and her daughters did their nails for the dance, got new shoes and had pictures taken earlier that morning.
“I enjoy the excitement of all the kids,” she said.
When asked about how she felt about her daughter’s graduation from preschool, she said she was proud.
“My youngest is growing up,” she said. Her other daughter is in first grade.
Brinley said she’s looking forward to going to kindergarten in the same school as her sister, Adalynn, who attended the prom with her.
“My sister will be able to walk me to my room,” she said.
