Mary Bernadine Hoffman

Mary Bernadine Schweppe Hoffman, 88, of Verona, formerly of Butler, died Thursday at her home.

Born Feb. 7, 1919, in Blairsville, she was the daughter of Walter Schweppe, a former mayor of Butler in the 1950s and 1960s, and Ethel Vogeley Schweppe.

She was a graduate of Chatham College, formerly the Pennsylvania College for Women, and was an active member of the Covenant United Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon.

She belonged to the Town and Country Garden Club and the Butler YWCA, where she was named Woman of the Year in 1986.

She was the beloved wife of Paul Baxter Hoffman, whom she married June 20, 1944. She also is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Bryson (Mimi) Datt, Mrs. Bill (Nancy) Remaley and Mrs. Tom (Becky) Wiles, all of Pittsburgh. She was the devoted grandmother of eight, Bryson Datt and his wife, Sarah, Baxter Datt, Andrew Datt, Chris Remaley and his wife Christine, Ellen Remaley, Lauren Wiles, Logan Wiles and Anna Wiles. A great-grandchild, Ivan Remaley; a cherished niece; and several nephews also survive.

Mrs. Hoffman was preceded in death by a son, Paul Baxter Hoffman Jr., who died in 1961, and a brother, Jack Schweppe.

<B>HOFFMAN </B>— Friends of Mary Bernadine Schweppe Hoffman, who died Thursday, May 3, 2007, will be received from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at Covenant United Presbyterian Church, 230 E. Jefferson St. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. Wednesday, officiated by the Rev. Dr. James E. Swanson.
