A water system problem at the West View Water Authority Baden water treatment plant in Cranberry caused some Cranberry residents to experience cloudy, discolored water and low water pressure on Wednesday morning.

According to an alert posted on the Cranberry Township website, the issue was caused by “sediment stirred up in the piping distribution system” at West View Water Authority because of an increase in water production. West View Water supplies all water to Cranberry Township.

“The increase was necessary to store water in preparation for a potential shutdown resulting from a train derailment in Harmar, upstream of both water treatment facilities,” the alert said.

The township emphasized that the water continues to meet quality standards and is safe to use.

“Everything is up to standard, so there are no issues with drinking it or anything like that,” said J.W. Johnson, communications specialist for Cranberry Township. He added that the precautions taken are similar to what is typically done during the hydrant flushing upkeep program over the summer.

“If discoloration appears, let a lower-level cold water tap run for one to two minutes until water is clear,” the advisory added. “West View Water and Cranberry Township are working to resolve the issue as quickly and safely as possible.”

Residents who experience discolored water or stained laundry should stop using the water for laundry, keep the laundry items damp until the water clears, and avoid using chlorine bleach, the web alert elaborated.

“Soak the items for a few hours and relaunder with your regular detergent and non-chlorine bleach,” the alert said.
