Pair of men chased, caught and accused of burglary

Two Pittsburgh men accused of burglary were caught Tuesday after being chased by their alleged victim and police.

Police said they arrested Aaron M. Grant, 38, and Gregory H. Taylor, 37, after they crashed the vehicle they allegedly used in the burglary of a Cranberry Township home.

Grant and Taylor were arraigned Wednesday before District Judge Kevin Flaherty on felony charges of burglary, conspiracy, illegal gun possession, unlicensed carrying of a gun, criminal trespass, theft and possessing stolen property.

They also have been charged with misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment, tampering with evidence, drug possession and drug paraphernalia possession. Taylor additionally was charged with misdemeanor leaving the scene of a crash.

According to charging documents, shortly after 3 p.m. a Cranberry Township resident saw two men in his home through his security system. Police said the homeowner told a friend, who arrived at the scene and saw Grant and Taylor fleeing in a maroon Lexus sedan “with its flashers on at a high rate of speed.”

The witness said Grant and Taylor were removing clothing items as they drove past.

Police said the homeowner was driving along Route 19 when he spotted the suspects’ vehicle and pulled in front of it in an effort to stop it. Police said the suspects’ vehicle traveled onto grass to avoid him and continued to Route 19 southbound.

Police said the homeowner continued to follow Grant and Taylor’s Lexus, which continued at “a high rate of speed.” Police said the chase ended when the Lexus crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of Executive Drive and Freedom Road.

Police said Taylor was driving and pulled the vehicle onto the parking lot of a day care, exited the vehicle and fled to Sheetz. Police arrested Grant at the vehicle and arrested Taylor at Sheetz a short time later.

“Taylor was sweating profusely, stating he was dropped off at Sheetz,” police said.

Police said the Sheetz security footage shows him leaving the Lexus and entering the store. Police said Taylor was wearing the same clothing shown on the homeowner’s security footage.

Police recovered two iPhones from Taylor and $1,635. In the grass near the Lexus’ passenger door, officers found a loaded 9mm pistol. In plain view inside the vehicle, police said they found multiple packages of suspected crack cocaine.

Police talked to the homeowner, who told officers his $25,000 Rolex watch, a $15,000 gold chain and $1,600 were missing from his bedroom. Police said the homeowner had security cameras outside and inside his home, and they showed Taylor enter an unlocked rear door and open the locked front door for Grant.

Police received a search warrant from District Judge Joseph Nash to further search the vehicle. Inside officers found 23 stamp bags of heroin, drug paraphernalia, 9mm ammunition, $904, the stolen Rolex and clothing used during the burglary, according to police.

District Judge Joseph Nash also later approved a search warrant requesting the DNA of both men to help identify who may have handled the gun.

Both Grant and Taylor are convicted felons. Since 2012, Grant has been convicted of felony offenses such as aggravated assault and acquiring a controlled substance through misrepresentation.

Since 2008, Taylor has been convicted of felony offenses such as robbery and aggravated assault. Taylor also has a case pending from 2021 in Allegheny County involving felony counts of aggravated assault, illegal possession of a gun and unlicensed carrying of a gun.

Grant and Taylor are scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing July 1 before District Judge Kevin Flaherty.
