The beat goes on.

And the Butler BlueSox continue to use it to squash their Prospect League baseball foes.

The Sox managed two big innings — four runs in the fourth and a seven-run eighth frame — to crush visiting West Virginia 11-1 Sunday afternoon at Kelly Automotive Park.

The win completed a two-game sweep of the Miners — Butler also prevailed in a 5-1 decision here Saturday — and ends West Virginia's hopes of winning the East Division title.

The Sox have not lost a series since dropping 2-of-3 to Champion City in a three-game set that ended July 16.

“Butler has done a great job this season,” said Miners manager Tim Epling, who knows what it takes to win in this league. He has guided his team to the championship series in five of the last seven years, including three league titles. “They understand who they are and you can tell they're playing with confidence.”

The only team with a mathematical chance of catching the Sox (34-21) for first place is Champion City (27-24) and the Kings are currently five games back. Champion City has seven games left on its schedule while Butler has five games remaining.

Paving the way to Sunday's victory was starting pitcher Pavin Parks, who allowed just one run on four hits in eight innings.

“It's always good to have your starter pitch late into the game,” said Butler manager Cody Herald. “It saves people's arms and especially with the playoffs coming up, that's very big for us.”

Parks allowed a run in the top of the third inning when Dan Ward's groundout plated Eddy Gonzalez. It put West Virginia up 1-0, but that slim edge was soon buried by Butler's bats, with a little help from the Miners.

Calvin Scott tied the game when he scored on a double-steal with one out in the fourth and Patrick Ferguson's sacrifice fly scored a second run. With two outs, Miner pitcher Brandon Nylin appeared to end the inning when he struck out Damian Maglione, but the latter reached on a dropped third strike.

It was a mistake West Virginia would pay for dearly.

Justin Kirkpatrick was hit by a pitch before Stefan Mrkonja laced a two-run double to the right-field corner and Butler's lead was pushed to 4-1.

“Often times, if one team is able to take advantage of a mistake like that, that's the team that ends up winning the game,” Herald said.

It was more than enough offense for Parks, who finished the game with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Butler's seven runs in the eighth were highlighted by Tanner Murphy's bases-clearing triple.

Bryce Spak worked a scoreless ninth inning.

Beginning with an 8-3 victory over Chillicothe July 18, Butler has now won 11 of its last 13 games. That includes Friday's game against Danville, which was suspended due to rain with two outs in the top of the seventh inning with the Sox leading 9-8.

The game was originally not going to count toward either team's record, but the Prospect League reversed that decision over the weekend.

“The league commissioner contacted us and asked us what went on,” said Herald. “We told him and he said that since we were leading after six innings, we would get the win.”

Butler went 11-5 against the Miners this season, though the teams could face each other again in the best-of-three semifinal series, which begins next Sunday.

Due to make-ups from previously postponed games, the Miners play Champion City five times this week.

“West Virginia is a good team,” said Herald. “We've just been fortunate that our pitchers have been able to keep their lineup off-balance.”
