Citing the basic principle that law-abiding citizens have the right to protect themselves and their families from intruders, state Sen.

Don White, R-41st, voted this week in support of the so-called "castle doctrine" legislation.The Senate, by a 41-8 vote, amended a separate bill with the castle doctrine provision."This is just plain common sense. Citizens have the right to protect themselves, their families and their property from intruders by whatever means necessary," White said."This is especially important for the people I represent. Many of my constituents live in rural areas, without close neighbors and where law enforcement officials may not be able to respond at a moment's notice."Under current law, a law-abiding citizen is required to retreat before using deadly force against an intruder who poses a threat to the life and safety of themselves and/or their family.Joining with White in voting for the amendment were Sens.
