Mars Area School District athletic director Scott Heinauer plans to retire just before the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, school officials said.

The agenda for the Mars Area School Board meeting on Tuesday night includes a provision to “accept the retirement of Scott Heinauer, Athletic Director, with no eligibility for the Early Retirement Incentive Program, effective August 5, 2022, at the end of the workday.”

Mars personnel administrator Lori Kennedy said the office received notification on Monday that Heinauer plans to retire.

Heinauer has served as athletic director at Mars for over 30 years. He also served as varsity football coach from 1992 to early 2022, and was not brought back as head coach this past January.

A listing for “Athletic Director” has been added to the Mars Area School District website as an available position. It was listed as a full-time position available at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year.

The director would be responsible for overseeing “all aspects of the athletics program including the hiring of coaches; scheduling, and budget preparation,” the listing specified. A bachelor’s degree is required, and a master’s degree is preferred, along with “proven experience as a PA Public School District Athletic Director.”

An ideal candidate “must have strong sense of character judgment, excellent communication skills, and leadership qualities,” the listing added. The deadline for application is June 28.
