Vaughn B. Diggs

Vaughn B. Diggs, 85, of Butler went to be with the Lord Tuesday morning at the Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born April 28, 1924, in Charleroi, he was a son of the late Lewis and Grace (Bonnell) Diggs.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church in Lyndora, where he donated a monument outside the church for those from the church who served in the military.

Mr. Diggs retired as a vice president of Citizens National Bank in Lyndora.

He was a founding member of the Tanglewood Senior Center, on the council of the Moraine Trails Boy Scouts of America, on the board of directors of the General Butler Vagabonds and on the board of the United Way with awards for outstanding services.

Formerly a deacon and elder of North Street Christian Church, he also was a member of VFW Post 249 in Butler.

He was a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, serving with the Sixth Army in the Pacific theater. He Re-enlisted with the Corps of Engineers, he served with honors earning the rank of master sergeant and received the Philippine Liberation with one Bronze Service Star, two Bronze Arrowheads, ribbons for the Asiatic theater with three Bronze Service Stars and the American Theater and medals for Good Conduct, World War II and the Meritorious Unit Award.

Vaughn enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, building model airplanes, gardening and big band music.

Surviving are his wife, SuSann L. (Povlick) Diggs; sons, Gary and Kathy Diggs of Butler, Kevin and Debbie Diggs of Connoquenessing and Randy Diggs of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; granddaughters, Amy Tolkacevic of Connoquenessing, Heather Kitajima of Connoquenessing and Rebecca Gabriel of West Palm Beach, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Ryan Kitajima, Julia Kitajima and Abby Tolkacevic; two stepsons, Shawn and Misty Stahl and Jason and Janice Stahl; and a sister: Gail Hanks of Texas.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Jean Diggs; his parents; and a brother.

<B>Diggs </B>— Friends of Vaughn B. Diggs, who died Tuesday., Nov. 24, 2009, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, 105 Kohler Ave., Lyndora. Abbot Leo Schlosser, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the North Side Cemetery, Butler.Parastas services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.In lieu of flowers, Vaughn requested that memorial donations be made to the Wounded Warriors Program, 7020 AC Skinner Parkway, Suite 100, Attn.
