Leslie L. "Les" Hilgar
Leslie L. "Les" Hilgar, 83, of Butler died at 9:45 a.m. Thursday in the Good Samaritan Hospice Unit at Concordia in Cabot.
Born May 5, 1926, in Euclid, he was the son of the late Andrew Lee Hilgar and Edith Fleeger Hilgar.
Mr. Hilgar was a systems analyst for Spang Co., retiring in 1982. He also sold real estate for the former Weldon-West Agency in Butler.
He graduated from West Sunbury Vocational High School in 1944; he then went on to graduate from Grove City College in 1950. He loved sports such as hunting, fishing and especially baseball.
He played baseball for the Air Corps in Austria in 1945-1946 while serving with the U.S. Army 10th Airborne Squadron during World War II and for the Butler Cubs from 1946 to 1950. He also enjoyed woodworking.
Mr. Hilgar was a member of the First Baptist Church of Butler, where he served on the church school board for many years.
Mr. Hilgar is survived by his wife, Delores I. "Dee Dee" Hilgar, whom he married on June 2, 1948; five sons, Dale and his wife, Linda, Hilgar of Eau Claire, Ray and his wife, Valerie, Hilgar of Chicora, Keith Hilgar of Landrum, S.C., Vernon Hilgar of Butler, and Mark Hilgar and Kathy Long of Butler; one daughter, Laura and her husband, Randall, Wyant of Rochester, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren, Leann Covert, Erin Wampler, Scott Hilgar, Jonathan Wyant, Cherith Shuboney, Emily Hilgar, Anna Hilgar, Christopher Hilgar, Sara Hilgar, and Dustin Hilgar; seven great-grandchildren; a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins; and two sisters, Mrs. Delores Glenn and Mrs. Donald (Shirley) McCandless II, both of West Sunbury.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hilgar was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Andrea Hilgar, and one brother, John V. Hilgar.
<B>HILGAR</B> — Friends of Leslie L. "Les" Hilgar, who died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the <B>Thompson-Miller Funeral Home</B>, 124 E. North St., Butler. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church with Pastor David Maitland of First Baptist Church officiating.
