Charges filed related to gun stolen from SR home

An arrest warrant has been issued for a Waynesburg man, recently released from state prison, who is accused of stealing a gun.

State police filed charges Friday against Jonathan Arroyo, 29, including felony counts of theft, possessing stolen property and illegally possessing a gun, about one month after a pistol and other items were reported stolen from a Slippery Rock Township home.

According to charging documents, the resident on May 8 reported the theft of her gun safe, which held her Springfield Armory Hellcat 9mm pistol.

The woman told police Arroyo had been “previously encouraging her to sell the handgun because Arroyo knows people that would buy it for three times its cost.”

Police said Arroyo was on probation following his release from state prison, but he asked the resident to take him to the Greyhound bus station in Pittsburgh because he wanted to visit Philadelphia.

Police said the woman discovered her gun safe missing two days later, along with other items, including watches, 9 mm ammunition and other accessories for the pistol.

The woman said she called Arroyo, and when asked about the stolen items, Arroyo replied, ‘I am sorry,’ and immediately hung up the phone,” said police in the affidavit.

According to police, the total value of the stolen items is $2,447.

Police said they consulted with Arroyo’s probation officer who has not been able to reach him. Police said Arroyo was supposed to return to the Slippery Rock Township home within three days based on the rules of his probation.

Once arrested, Arroyo will be arraigned before a local judge, assigned bail and scheduled for a preliminary hearing before District Judge Joseph Nash.
