Grace Irene 'Betty' McCandless Jordan

Grace Irene “Betty” McCandless Jordan, 90, of Slippery Rock passed away at 4:10 p.m. Friday at her home.

She was born in Mercer Township, Butler County on May 3, 1923, to V.D. McCandless and Blanche Arnetta Hockenberry McCandless.

She married Michael Jordan Jr. on July 23, 1949, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 25, 1994.

She was lovingly known as the “lunch room monitor” at Slippery Rock Elementary School for 30-plus years. She took great interest and left a lasting impression with the children she cared for at school.

She was a member of the Slippery Rock United Methodist Church. She devoted her life to raising, nurturing and caring for numerous generations of her family.

Survivors include her two daughters, Judith “Judy” A. and her husband, Robert, Castillo of Billings, Mont. and Rebecca “Becky” J. Johnson of Slippery Rock; her seven grandchildren, Jennifer Osborne, who she raised, Jeff and Jeremy Johnson, Aimee Dennis, and Craig, Chad and Tara Reinhardt, and her 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her three brothers, Brose, Vollie, and Dick; an infant sister, and a grandson.

JORDAN — The family of Grace Irene “Betty” McCandless Jordan, who passed away Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, will receive friends at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St. Slippery Rock, from noon until time of service at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The funeral services will be at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. James Lewis of Butler officiating. Interment will follow at Slippery Rock Cemetery.
