Lake search to resume for missing man

FRANKLIN TWP — Divers by 9 a.m today were to resume their search on Lake Arthur for a Westmoreland County man who is presumed dead.

The 42-year-old New Kensington man, who authorities did not identify, never resurfaced after jumping off the back of a pontoon boat near the Route 528 boat launch shortly after 12 a.m. Sunday, said officials at Moraine State Park.

He and three friends had just wrapped up several hours of night fishing.

“As they were coming into the launch area,” said Jake Weiland, the assistant manager at Moraine State Park, “he told his friends he was going to jump off and would meet them back at the dock.”

The man apparently did not make the 100-yard swim back to the dock.

“It was very dark and he may have become disoriented in the water,” Weiland said.

He was not wearing a personal flotation device when he jumped into the 10 feet of water.
