James “Jim” Michael Shuty Sr.
James “Jim” Michael Shuty Sr., 75, formerly of Slippery Rock, passed away peacefully Saturday with his loving wife by his side at their home in Farrell, Pa.
Jim was born Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, 1941, in Sewickley, Pa., the youngest son of Anna Kropf Shuty and Andrew E. Shuty. He grew up in McKees Rocks, Pa., and graduated from North Allegheny High School.
Jim attended the University of South Dakota on a baseball scholarship and received a bachelor of science degree from Geneva College, Beaver Falls, Pa.
He was the owner-operator of two surveying companies: Shuty Surveyors and Associates in Allegheny County and Northern Surveyors in Butler County.
Shuty Surveyors' numerous projects included: bridges, interstate highway construction, UPMC hospitals, power plants, Greater Pittsburgh Airport construction and the coal industry in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. However, the main thrust of his company was subdivision and land development.
While Jim lived in Slippery Rock, he devoted his time to the baseball programs as coach and manager, and he was on the board of directors of the mini-midget football program. He always enjoyed Pittsburgh professional sports teams.
His passion, next to his wife Janice, was the outdoors, including hunting, fishing, admiring wildflowers and identifying wildlife.
Jim and his wife, Janice, have lived on Virginia's Eastern Shore for the last 15 years, where he continued his pursuit of hunting and fishing. He was quite successful in flounder fishing, winning numerous tournaments, and at the age of 72 got the largest deer of his 60-year hunting career. He loved the Eastern Shore, calling the people the friendliest he had ever met.
In Jim's words — he had a great life.
Besides his parents, preceding him in death were his first wife, the former Eleanor Tilp; and his brothers, Richard and Ed.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, the former Janice Bindas Morgenstern; and the children and grandchildren they shared: James, Katie, Ben and Clarissa Shuty; Jeff and Kara Shuty, all of Slippery Rock; Jason, Lindsey and Eleanor Shuty of Columbia, S.C.; Jason, Beth and Sadie Morgenstern of Camp Hill, Pa.; and Chris, Christy, Rachel and Ryder Morgenstern of Dillsburg, Pa.
Jim was well loved and will be greatly missed.
