Butler Twp man charged with dog death, neglect
A Lyndora man is facing felony charges after police said he failed to take a dog to a veterinarian, which resulted in its death and being left to decompose for five days.
According to charges filed Monday, Wayne V. Edwards, 24, was charged with felony aggravated cruelty to animals and four misdemeanors for cruelty and neglect to animals.
Butler Township police said they received a report July 4 of two abandoned dogs inside Edwards’ residence, two days after Edwards told someone about his injured collie mix dog.
“(The complainant) advised that Edwards had contacted him to take the injured dog to the vet, but that the dog died before it could be transported,” the investigating officer said.
On the evening of July 6, police said, a neighbor reported a “foul and offensive odor” emitting from Edwards’ apartment. Edwards was unable to be reached by phone, according to charging documents.
Police obtained a search warrant for Edwards’ residence and found two malnourished pit bull mix dogs, as well as the carcass of a collie mix dog.
“I then opened the bathroom door and found a rotting dog carcass on the floor,” the investigating officer said in the report. “Maggots were all over the walls, floor and carcass.”
The original complainant told police Edwards had told him the dog broke its leg.
“According to (the complainant), the defendant told him the bed fell on the dog, which caused the injury. Apparently the bed was up on bricks and the dog knocked it over, causing the bed to fall,” the officer said.
Edwards was advised to see a veterinarian about the dog’s injury, but was told the dog could not be seen, the complainant said in the report.
“The defendant placed the dog in the bathroom and asked (the complainant) to remove it. (The complainant) said he declined to remove the dog,” the officer said.
According to charging documents, the other two dogs were taken to Butler County Humane Society, where they were reported as underweight. A contact said one dog vomited maggots and both ate and drank frantically upon arrival.
