Chart-topping Celtic rock band to perform at Horse Trading Days
A chart-topping Celtic rock band is set to perform on the final day of Horse Trading Days in Zelienople.
Gaelic Storm, which has headlined for some of the largest Irish festivals across the country, including the annual Pittsburgh Irish Festival, will perform for the first time at Horse Trading Days on Saturday at the ShuBrew Square stage.
Gaelic Storm was formed in the mid-1990s in Santa Monica, Calif., by Patrick Murphy and Steve Twigger, who are both still in the band today, according to their official website. They began as a “pub band,” but their band gained popularity after appearing on the blockbuster hit, Titanic with their song, “An Irish Party in Third Class.”
The band consistently travels across the U.S. and internationally about 200 days a year. To date, the group has performed over 2,000 shows, topping the Billboard World Chart seven times. The band makes appearances at mainstream music festivals and attracts crowds of all ages.
“Traditional with an edge,” is how Tony Sgro, a local production manager who has also been involved with the Pittsburgh Irish Festival, described the band’s music.
According to Sgro, the band’s high energy is what makes them stand out from other Celtic bands. That energy appeals to the younger crowds who come out to enjoy their music, while still appeasing the older generations with their devotion to traditional Irish.
“We met them in February after we saw them at a show, Jergel’s in Warrendale,” said Matthew Edwards, executive director of the Zelienople Area Business Association and director of events for Horse Trading Days.
Their most recent album, “Go Climb a Tree,” came out in 2017.
The latest addition to the band came in June 2022, when the group welcomed its new fiddle player, award-winning Massachusetts native Natalya Kay.
Opening the evening will be the Pittsburgh-based Celtic rock band called The Low Kings from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Gaelic Storm will take the spotlight from 8 to 9:30 p.m. at ShuBrew Square, 149 S. Main St., Zelienople.
Tickets for the show are available online at horsetradingdays.com. The price of tickets ranges from $25 to $50 apiece. All seating is first-come, first served within the ticket option's designated seating area.
