Former Butler resident murdered in Florida, deputies say

A former Butler man allegedly was shot and killed Saturday in Bradenton, Fla., by his daughter’s boyfriend, according to multiple reports.

A news release stated that the Manatee County, Fla., sheriff’s office arrested Charles Shadrach, 29, of Bradenton, in relation to the death of a 67-year-old Bradenton man.

A family member identified the deceased as Karl Goettler, who graduated from Butler High School in 1973 and whose father served with Butler City Police.

“Remember when (then) president-elect John F. Kennedy came through Butler,” read a post by an account named Karl Goettler on a Butler-based nostalgia page. “Ya me (and) dad Sgt. Goettler led the way.”

According to authorities, deputies arrived on the scene around 2:25 p.m., where they found Goettler — who they did not identify, citing Florida’s Marsey’s Law — dead from apparent gunshot wounds. Marsey’s Law provides rights and protections for crime victims.

“The victim appears to have died quickly from his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene,” authorities said.

Authorities said Goettler’s wife and daughter were in the home when they heard gunshots; when they went outside, they saw Goettler lying face down.

“Shadrach then placed the gun by the front door and told his girlfriend (the victim’s daughter) ‘He won’t be bothering you anymore,’” authorities said.

Authorities said in the release that detectives had learned of a series of domestic arguments between Goettler, his daughter and Shadrach, who all were living in the same house.

Authorities said moments after the shooting, Shadrach walked down the street unarmed and surrendered himself to a responding deputy.

The sheriff’s office announced plans to charge Shadrach with second-degree murder and to continue the investigation.
