Betty J. Fischer
“A limb has fallen from the family tree.”
Betty J. Fischer, 80, of Butler, passed away on Aug. 10, 2022, at Butler Memorial Hospital.
Betty was born April 15, 1942, in Butler, and was the daughter of the late Edward and Margaret Angert Leitem.
She was a member of All Saints Parish, St. Conrad Church in Meridian, and was a past member of Christian Women’s Guild, now Sisters in Faith. She was very involved in this women’s association, making homemade soups and pierogi and helping with the church’s bake sales and Lenten fish fry dinners.
A homemaker, she was also the longtime bookkeeper and secretary for her husband’s concrete business.
Betty was a 1960 graduate of Butler High School, and graduated in 1963 as a registered nurse from New Castle Hospital School of Nursing. She had been employed at Butler Memorial Hospital.
She loved working outdoors in her flower gardens, especially her rock garden. She also enjoyed mowing grass and decorating her house and yard for all holidays.
Betty was known for her love of cookie baking for all occasions. Also, she enjoyed creating miniature Dicken’s North Pole villages, and a Hallmark village of their house and shop ornaments.
Betty did extensive work documenting the family genealogy, and corresponded with relatives in Germany and Hungary.
She is survived by her two daughters, Maria (Gary Jr. “Rusty”) Stirling and Lisa (Steve) Shimko, both of Butler; her dear brother and best friend, Jim Leitem, and his wife, Linda; a brother-in-law, Jim Desmond; and three generations of nieces and nephews.
She also leaves behind her faithful companion, her cat Muffy, who never left her side, and her neighbor and best friend, Beverly Oesterling, who helped her to the end.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Fischer, whom she married in April 1965, and who passed away May 3, 2020; sister, Donna Desmond; brother, Ronald Leitem; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Anthony and Theresa Fischer; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
