George Melvin Campbell
George Melvin Campbell, 86, died May 7 in Beaverton, Ore.
He was born May 14, 1929, in Franklin Township, to Viletta (Stamm) and Richard J. Campbell.
He is survived by his wife, Gayle; his two children and their spouses, Shaun Morris Campbell (Edie I. Davis) and Kathryn Ann Campbell Chevalier (Michael); his grandchildren, Quinn Thomas Campbell and Devin Matthew Chevalier; his sisters, Vera Edinboro and Jean Fry; and his brothers, Clyde and Bill.
He is predeceased by his parents, Viletta V. Stamm and Richard J. Campbell; his sister, Joann Bell; and his brothers, Jim, Bruce and Reed.
After graduating from Concord High School in 1947, George enlisted in the U.S. Army. In 1950, George enrolled at Hiram College in Ohio, majoring in chemistry under the GI Bill and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1954. He later earned his master's degree in physics and his doctorate in chemistry at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.
George worked as a radiological physicist at the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois and at the University of Minnesota. He also was a research scientist from 1963 to 1994 at Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico.
