Virginia “Jean” Anderson Hockenberry, 92, of Grove City, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022, at Butler Memorial Hospital due to complications from a recent fall, with her son, Dennis, by her side.

Virginia was born on April 21, 1930, in the Village of Cadogan, Armstrong County, to Richard E. and Blanche E. (Fair) Anderson.

Virginia grew up in West Sunbury and graduated from West Sunbury High School in 1949.

She married Rodney W. Hockenberry on June 9, 1950, at the home of Raymond and Jackie Pierce of Harrisville.

Together, Virginia and Rodney opened Big Oak Mobile Home Park in 1956, and in 1971, Big Oak Mobile Home Sales.

Being a natural caretaker, Virginia made herself available for personal care, support and trusted confidence to their tenants. They both believed a full life cannot be achieved without service to others.

Virginia was a lifelong member of East Main Presbyterian Church in Grove City, where she helped with vacation Bible school for many years.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and White Shrine of Jerusalem.

In 1985, Virginia and Rodney bought their winter home in Fort Pierce, Fla. They were members of Executive East Pioneers RV Club, where they attended rallies and traveled with longtime friends throughout the country.

Virginia was an enthusiastic fan of Grove City High School sports, and never missed an event for her sons, David and Douglas. Virginia was always supportive to all of the team members. She was a member of the Football Mothers Club.

She was a meticulous housekeeper, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and she was most happy when her entire family was together. Nurturing her family was the priority of her life.

She is survived by her husband, Rod at home; three sons, David R., Douglas P., and Dennis W. Hockenberry, all of Grove City; six grandchildren, Jennifer Myers, Dawn Marie (Henry) Deal, Matthew (Amanda) Hockenberry, William (Jennifer) Hockenberry, Richard (Renee) Hockenberry and Timothy (Rhonda) Hockenberry; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Scherri Grazier of Butler; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Frances M. Hockenberry; four sisters, Marjorie Held, Annabelle Hoover, Joan Cumberland and Patricia Ifft; and a brother, Richard Anderson.

HOCKENBERRY — Visitation hours for Virginia “Jean” Anderson Hockenberry, who died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at CUNNINGHAM FUNERAL HOME, 306 Bessemer Ave., Grove City.

Additional visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Bill Hoffman officiating.

Memorial contributions can be made to East Main Presbyterian Church, 120 E. Main St., Grove City, PA 16127.

Burial will be in Slippery Rock Cemetery.
