John Wallace 'Wally' Shakley

John Wallace “Wally” Shakley, 77, of Petrolia passed away Saturday morning at the VNA Inpatient Hospice, Butler, following an illness.

Born in Petrolia on May 3, 1934, he was the son of the late Harry Russell and Garnet J. Shoup Shakley.

Following graduation from Fairview Township-Karns City School in 1952, he began a 44-year career with the former Penn-Drake Refinery, now Penreco, in Karns City. He worked at the in-plant service station, in the maintenance department and served as weighmaster. Wally worked at Penn-Drake from November 1952 through June 1996.

After retiring from the refinery, Wally drove special needs children in the Karns City School District for a number of years.

For decades he was an active member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), first at Karns City Lodge and later at Connoquenessing Lodge 278 at Butler. He not only held all local offices, but served at the state level as chaplain under three Grandmasters.

He was a life member of the Petrolia and the North Washington volunteer fire companies.

Wally also was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church of Petrolia.

He loved his family with great devotion and enjoyed the many visits of his grandchildren

Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Jean Johns Shakley, who he married Oct. 9, 1954; two daughters, Sheila (Gary) Tonks of Hilliard, Ohio, and Frances (Rich) Ingham of Punxsutawney; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Velma Jean Shakley of Parker and Margaret (Peg) Merryman of Petrolia; two brothers, Dean R. Shakley of Parker and Donald L. Shakley of Chicora; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Shakley on May 17, 1979; his brother, Allen Bruce “Butch” Shakley, and his sister, Nancy Jane Shakley.

<B>SHAKLEY</B> — Friends of John Wallace “Wally” Shakley, who passed away Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at <B>H. JACK BUZARD FUNERAL HOME</B>, 201 S. Wayne St., Parker. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Scott Bunting of the Presbyterian Church of Petrolia officiating.
