Paul 'Mitch' Frerotte, ex-pro football player

Paul Mitchael "Mitch" Frerotte, 43, of Kittanning died Wednesday at his home.

Born March 30, 1965, in Kittanning, he was the son of Lilah Sybert Frerotte of Kittanning and Prosper Paul Frerotte, who died March 29, 2006.

He was a 1983 graduate of Kittanning High School, where he was MVP of the Allegheny Conference in football, a member of Post-Gazette Fab 22, First Team All-State at linebacker and Second Team All-State at tight end. He is the only player from Kittanning High School to play in the Big 33 Football Game. His jersey, No. 80, is retired at Kittanning High School.

Mr. Frerotte was recruited by and played for Penn State University to play offensive guard. He was the starting guard in the 1985 Orange Bowl Game and the 1986 Fiesta Bowl National Championship Game.

He continued his football career after college by signing a free-agent contract in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills. He played with Buffalo in 1987 and 1990 to 1992 as an offensive guard and played in three Super Bowls. He still holds the single season record for the most touchdown receptions by an offensive lineman.

In 1993 he signed a free-agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks and suffered a career-ending neck injury.

Mr. Frerotte was a member of St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Roman Catholic Church, Kittanning, and the Ford City Eagles; and when he was with the Bills, he was adopted into the Hoya-Day-Da-Nee Indian Tribe.

He enjoyed hunting and riding his Harley.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Lee (Edward) Walker of Kittanning; two brothers, Ed Frerotte of Middletown, N.Y., and Kurt Frerotte of Kittanning; three nephews, Karl, Kraig and Kent Walker, all of Kittanning, and his golden retriever, Doc.
