II-VI changes 50-year-old name
The Clinton Township-based company named for elements of the periodic table in 1971 has a new moniker, thanks to a merger with a California firm.
Officials at II-VI, a manufacturer of engineered materials and optoelectric components, announced Thursday that the company’s name has officially changed to Coherent Corp.
II-VI merged with Coherent in July in a $6.5 million deal, when it was announced that the uniquely named business would become known as “Coherent Corp.”
The company was founded in 1971 in Clinton Township, by scientist Carl J. Johnson, who named the company for groups II and VI of the Periodic Table of Elements.
The components and materials originally manufactured at the start-up company were mainly from groups II and VI.
Vincent D. Mattera Jr., chairman and CEO of II-VI, said in July that while the name Coherent has a strong association with laser production in the market, it also means “bringing things together.”
