Apartment residents flee fire in Evans City
EVANS CITY — Six people and three cats made it out safely after fire ignited late Wednesday night on the first floor of an apartment building in the 300 block of North Washington Street.
Firefighters made quick work of the blaze that is under investigation by the state police fire marshal.
No one was injured in the fire that is not considered suspicious.
It was called in about 11 p.m. and firefighters left the scene about 2:30 a.m. today.
The fire started on the ground floor of the two-and-a-half story building, an older-style house later converted into three apartments, authorities said.
Assisting the Evans City VFD were firefighters from Harmony, Callery and Zelienople. Evans City police and Harmony also were called.
The first floor apartment sustained moderate fire damage. The second floor unit had moderate smoke and minimal heat damage.
Fire officials said the tenants found temporary housing with family and friends.
