BASA accepts purchase offer from Pennsylvania American Water
BUTLER TWP — The process for the sale of the Butler Area Sewer Authority to Pennsylvania American Water Co. took a big step forward on Tuesday morning.
The authority’s five-man board of directors voted unanimously at their monthly meeting to approve a resolution to accept the water company’s $231.5 million offer for the authority, its treatment plant and all other assets, infrastructure and equipment.
Duane McKee, executive director at the authority, said Butler City Council members are expected to vote on the sale on Thursday and Butler Township Commissioners on Monday.
If the deal goes through as expected, the city and township would split the proceeds of the sale after all authority debt is paid off.
The sale of the authority has been a controversial issue in the community, as some see the water company’s ability to fund infrastructure improvements as a boon to customers, while others fear increases in their sewer bills as a result of the sale.
