Marie A. Heasley

Marie A. Heasley, 100 years and 10 months old, died Saturday morning peacefully at her home on Freeport Road.

Born in Butler, April 12, 1905, she was a daughter of Thomas D. and Daisy Stoner Brophy.

She was a lifelong horticulturist. In the early 1930s, together with her husband, Louis Heasley Sr., she co-founded the Heasley Nurseries Inc. and continued to work there until after her 100th birthday.

Mrs. Heasley had been granted a lifetime membership in the Pennsylvania Landscape Nursery Association (P.L.N.A.) and received several other awards and recognitions for her work. She always lived by her motto: "What you do in life, comes back to you many fold." This, her life saying, was inscribed on an award stone presented to her by the P.L.N.A. during an Arbor Day celebration where she was honored.

She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Herman.

Surviving are a son and daughter and their spouses, Louis E. and Jane Heasley Jr. and Mary Ellen and Dale Strobel, all of Butler; and two sisters, Margaret Painter and Gertrude Stanley, both of Butler.

She also is survived by seven grandchildren and their spouses, Wayne and Andrea Strobel of Butler, David and Celeste Strobel of Wyomissing, Berks County, Diane and Robert Hughes of Saxonburg, LuAnn and Richard Green, and Linda and Kenneth Cranmer and Lisa and Michael Shoop, all of Butler, and LeAnna and Timothy Ashe of Warren, Pa.; 14 great-grandchildren, Shawn, Kelly, Garrett and Mitchell Strobel, Liz, Mick and Maura Brennan, R.J. and Katie Hughes, Eric and Chad Green, Andrew Cranmer and Nicholas and Sarah Ashe; and a great-great-grandson, Benjermin Strobel.

Her family wishes to acknowledge a special thanks to her caregivers, Donna, Sandi, Brenda, Joyce, Shirley, Patti, Amanda and Tracy for taking such good care of her.

Along with her husband, who died May 6, 1979, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jane (Mrs. Guy) Wright; and four brothers, Leo, Dean, Richard and Ernest Brophy.

HEASLEY — Friends of Marie A. Heasley, who died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at theGEIBEL FUNERAL HOME, 201 E. Cunningham St. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, Herman. The Rev. John McCloskey, O.F.M. Cap., will officiate.
