2 missing Pa. kayakers survive cold, wet night
APOLLO, Armstrong County — Two missing kayakers managed to swim to shore and keep warm overnight by building a fire after their craft snagged on a submerged tree in a river.
The pair, 22-year-old Jaimie Simon of Plum and 23-year-old Zachary Becker were reported missing Sunday evening, prompting dozens of volunteer firefighters to search the banks of the Kiski River in Kiski Township that night and again this morning.
Simon says she had turned blue from being in the cold water after Becker grabbed her and got her safely to shore. Once there, Becker started a fire which kept them warm overnight.
The pair were found about 9 a.m. today and checked out at an ambulance station before going home.
