10K benefits lake restoration
Butler’s Ed Doyle has fond memories of family fishing trips and outings to Glade Run Lake in Middlesex Township. It’s these memories that inspired him to create WOW (Where’s Our Water) 10K, set for 9 a.m. July 6.
Glade Run Lake opened in 1955 as a fishing lake under the direction of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Because the Fish and Boat Commission relies almost exclusively on fishing license and boat registration fees for funding, it did not have the $4 million available to make needed repairs to Glade Run Lake’s failing dam.
Although the lake added $1.2 million to the local economy annually, supplied water for emergency responders and provided wildlife habitat, Glade Run Lake was closed and drained in 2011. Even though PFBC has expressed a desire to make necessary renovations, it lacks the funding to effect repairs.
Glade Run Lake Conservancy, a nonprofit organization, was formed in 2011 to help restore Glade Run Lake. With more than 1,000 members, donations and grants and pledges from local government, more than $100,000 has been raised so far toward their goal.
WOW 10K hopes to add to that total and already has accepted more than $4,000 from generous local business sponsors.
WOW 10K begins at Silver Crest Stables on Overbrook Road and ends with a downhill finish at the base of Glade Run Lake. Doyle, owner of Up-N-Running, has designed the measured but not USATF certified loop course, to offer an alternative to the multitude of 5K races on the calendar.
“The 10K is something different,” Doyle says, “and it shows off the beauty of Middlesex Township.”
Runners in the WOW race will appreciate not only the beauty, but the comfort of running on the rolling back roads. There will be three water stations along the course, two with cooling hoses, one with Gatorade in addition to water.
Gatorade and other refreshments will also be available at the finish line. Runners will also enjoy music by a DJ, learn more about Glade Run Lake Conservancy at their information booth, become a member of the GRLC or purchase one of the organization’s t-shirts. Participants will also receive a commemorative WOW t-shirt and are eligible for competitive awards for top three overall and age group finishers.
Doyle is expecting more than 150 participants for this inaugural event. Registrations will be accepted at Up-N-Running store until race day or online at www.racersignup.com/glade-run-lake/register. Day of event registrations will also be accepted beginning at 7:30 a.m. on July 6.
Runners should plan to park at the baseball field on Steiner Bridge Road, around the block from Silver Crest Stables. The baseball field is also a short distance from the finish area. Doyle hopes to offer shuttle service from the finish area.
Doyle expressed his gratitude for the many who have volunteered to help make WOW 10K a success, but he is also accepting additional volunteers for race day.
