Elderly woman dies in fire

An Indiana, Pa., woman who was visiting her vacation property along the Allegheny River in Armstrong County on Sunday was unable to exit the house when flames broke out.

Judith Zacherl, 79, was pronounced dead at 2 p.m. in the living room of the Madison Township property after firefighters extinguished the blaze, according to a statement from Brian K. Myers, Armstrong County coroner.

Her husband reported he had last seen her in that room.

There will be no autopsy. Myers ruled the cause of death as carbon monoxide asphyxiation and the manner of death was ruled accidental, as no foul play is suspected.

The incident remains under investigation by state police in Kittanning and the county coroner’s office.
