Mars girls win in OT again

ADAMS TWP — Gwen Howell scored with 1:34 left in the first overtime Thursday night as the Mars girls soccer team advanced to the WPIAL 3A semifinals with a 1-0 win over Franklin Regional at the Mars Athletic Complex.

The Planets (16-0) received an overtime game-winner from Howell in both of their playoff games so far.

Mars is unbeaten in 79 straight games and will play in the semifinal round vs. Greater Latrobe Tuesday night at a site and time to be determined.

Greater Latrobe defeated Thomas Jefferson, 3-0, Thursday for its ninth consecutive win.

Peters Township 1, Butler 0 — The Golden Tornado (10-7-1) ended their season with this quarterfinal loss on the road. Pters Township (123-1-3) is unbeaten in its last 14 games.

Fort LeBoeuf 7, Slippery Rock 1 — The Rockets were defeated in this District 10 Class 2A quarterfinal. Eve Miller scored Slippery Rock’s lone goal as the team finished the season with a 9-9-1 record.

Boys Soccer

Karns City received goals from four different players in blanking Ridgway, 4-0, at Diehl Stadium in the District 9 1A semifinals.

Jacob Callihan, Mallick Metcalfe, Landon Wilson and Dane King all scored for the Gremlins (16-3). Callihan leads the team with 15 goals this season.

Goalkeeper Lucas Yasika made three saves in getting the shutout. Karns City plays Elk County Catholic for the district championship Wednesday in Brockway.
