Tuesday — Christine R. Banfield, 28, of Butler was charged with having drugs and other contraband earlier this month when she was found in a car under the General Butler Bridge.
Police said they noticed the car about 10:50 a.m. April 9 below the bridge near Etna Street. Moments later, a minivan approached it and then left. Inside the car, according to court documents, police saw a woman, later identified as Banfield, appear to be “furtively stashing items.”
An officer looked into the side passenger window and spotted stamp bags of suspected heroin on the seat. Additionally, he saw a wooden box containing what appeared to be empty stamp bags.
A check of the box also turned up three needles, two spoons with suspected drug residue and other contraband.
Police found a stamp bag of suspected heroin on the defendant’s seat when she got out of the car. In her purse, court documents said, they seized four bags and two empty bags of suspected heroin.
Banfield is charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.
Tuesday — Adam R. Took, 30, of Butler was charged with cruelty to animals for allegedly abusing a pet cat.
A veterinarian notified authorities March 18 after the cat was taken to her for treatment of swelling to the head. The veterinarian also learned that the cat had been diagnosed Feb. 25 at an animal hospital in Summit Township.
Took said the cat had accidentally dumped paint on herself, according to court documents.
The cat was re-examined March 13 at the same veterinary hospital, documents said, and found it had more injuries including fractures to the ribs, left paw and tail.
Took told authorities that the cat injured herself when it got caught under a stove.
Police in their criminal complaint against the defendant noted that the cat “sustained multiple injuries and fractures during a few week period not consistent with accidents.”

April 10 — Police charged a Beaver County man with being more than twice the legal limit for alcohol stemming from a traffic stop last month on Route 8 at McFann Road. Colin R. Dunham, 32, of New Brighton was stopped about 1 a.m. March 29 when an officer saw his truck drifting in and out of its lane.
Dunham reeked of alcohol and he appeared impaired, according to court documents. He was arrested after failing field sobriety tests. He was taken to UPMC Passavant Cranberry for a blood test.
A toxicology report showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.186 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.
In addition to driving under the influence, Dunham is charged with careless driving, failing to keep right, driving an unregistered vehicle and driving without valid inspection.
April 10 — Nathan A. Arthur, 20, of Middlesex Township was charged in connection with a two-vehicle, hit-and-run crash last month on Browns Hill Road near Linda Lane.
The other driver told police that she was traveling south on Browns Hill Road about 8:30 a.m. March 15 when a pickup truck pulled out of a driveway and struck her car, pushing her vehicle into the opposing lane and nearly off the road.
The driver of the truck did not stop and sped away. But the woman recounted that she caught up to the truck on Browns Hill Road just south of Leslie Road, less than a mile from the wreck.
She spoke to the truck driver, later identified as the defendant, who had pulled off the road and was looking at the damage to his truck, court documents said. She took photos of the man, truck and license plate.
Arthur told the woman that he did not have his insurance information and instead gave her his telephone number. But when she later tried to call him, documents said, he failed to return her messages. She subsequently notified police.
An officer went to Arthur’s home, where the defendant admitted hitting the car. But, documents said, he claimed the other vehicle was “on his side of the road and traveling at a high speed.”
He also told the officer that he pulled over “but she was in too big of a hurry to exchange (insurance) information.”
Arthur is charged with hit-and-run and failing to stop and give information after an accident.
