Fred. D. Smith

Fred. D. Smith, 80, of Natrona Heights passed away Saturday at Fair Winds Manor, Winfield Township.

He was born July 30, 1929, in Lyndora, the son of the late Serge "Sam" and Olga "Helen" Kononchuk Smith.

Fred was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Air Force.

He was a 1947 graduate of Butler High School and a 1951 graduate of Grove City College. He received his master's degree in secondary education in 1957 from the University of Pittsburgh and his master's of natural science in 1966 from Arizona State University.

Fred retired in 1991 after 33 years as a physics teacher at Highlands School District.

He attended Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Parish, Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Natrona Heights, was a member of the N.E.A., P.S.E.A., H.E.A., the Harrison Hills Volunteer Fire Company in Natrona Heights and the American Legion in Lyndora, and he was on the board for Sylvan Pool in Natrona Heights.

Fred was involved in the Junior Achievement program in Tarentum, worked the voting polls at the Harrison Hills Volunteer Fire Company and enjoyed fishing, gardening and traveling.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley M. Balog Smith; sons, Fred (Deborah Brodsky) Smith of Farmington Hills, Mich., and Michael (Leanne Sharer) Smith of Freeport; daughters, Maribeth (Jacqueline Goor) Smith of San Diego, Calif., and Amy (Brian) Himmel of O'Hara Township; seven grandchildren, Christopher, Scott, Harrison and Aaron Smith and Rachel, Cara and Lauren Himmel; a brother, Ronald (Linda) Smith of North Canton, Ohio; and a sister-in- law, Georgene Smith of Brackenridge.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas and Daniel Smith; and sisters, Nina Mamula and Nellie Bachura.

Smith, who died Saturday, June 12, 2010, will be received from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the <B>Cicholski-Zidek Funeral Home,</B> 1522 Carlisle St., Natrona Heights, 724-224-8688, where funeral ceremonies will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Officiating will be the Rev. Paul R. Ziatyk.
