Harvey E. Harper Jr.

Harvey E. Harper Jr., 90, a well-known citizen of Zelienople and Scottsdale, Ariz., died Tuesday at Passavant Retirement Center, Zelienople.

Born Jan. 6, 1915, in Dormont, he was the son of Harvey E. Sr. and Maude Sammis Harper.

After graduation from Zelienople High School, he worked at Harper's Service Station on Main Street in Zelienople in association with his father and took over the business in 1948. In 1951, he built Harper's Truck Stop in Cranberry Township, where Wal-Mart is now, until his retirement in 1979.

Mr. and Mrs. Harper then retired to Scottsdale, where they lived until October of this year when they returned to Zelienople.

He was a member of the Harmony Lodge 429 F&AM for more than 50 years. He also belonged to the Valley of New Castle Consistory and the Syria Shrine Temple of Pittsburgh. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Harper family members were pioneer settlers in Ohio and Pennsylvania and have been in Butler County since the 1820s.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Bernice May Lusk Harper; a daughter, Marilyn Ann and her husband, Charles W. Humes, of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; a son, William E. Harper and his wife, Jean Johnston Harper, of Fombell; three grandchildren, Rebecca Humes Gelber, M.D. and her husband, Matthew, of Incline Village, Nev., Malinda Humes Sneary and her husband, Chad, of Ashtabula, Ohio, and William M. Harper and his wife, Debra, of Harmony; and a great-grandson, Tristin Lane Sneary.

A brother, Eugene C. Harper and his wife, Gloria, of Scottsdale, and nieces and nephews also survive.

HARPER — Friends of Harvey E. Harper Jr., who died Tuesday will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at BOYLAN FUNERAL HOME, 324 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople. Funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Entombment will be at the Zelienople Community Mausoleum.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Zelienople Area Public Library, 227 S.
