Rams get rolling
BUFFALO TWP — Freeport managed to slow down a running Highlands team in the first quarter, but as Yellowjackets’ boys basketball coach Sean Devinney said: “One quarter does not make a game.”
The Golden Rams soon began to dictate the pace and dealt host Freeport a 74-47 section loss at home Friday night.
Highlands entered the game after dropping back-to-back decisions to Penn Hills and Hampton in which the Rams scored a combined 100 points. They were eager to get back to their style of play after dropping 93, 92, 88 and 82 points in prior wins this season.
Freeport’s first possession lasted nearly two minutes and the ‘Jackets trailed just 12-10 after one quarter.
“We play good half-court defense and it’s just a matter of picking and choosing when to pick up the pace,” said Highlands coach Corey Dotchin.
The Rams (8-2, 1-1) began to do that in the second period, but even more important than their style of play was their efficient shooting. They sank nine of their 14 attempts from the field, receiving field goals from five different players, and led 33-22 at the break.
