West Wayne water main breaks fixed
Two breaks in as many days in a main water line on West Wayne Street were fixed and water service restored before expected.
Crews on Sunday made emergency repairs to the 60-year-old, 8-inch water line and restored water to the 22 affected customers in the Island neighborhood of the city, according to Gary Lobaugh, Pennsylvania American spokesman.
However, a second break in the line sent crews back to West Wayne Street on Sunday, and work was ongoing on Monday morning.
By 12:30 p.m. water service was restored to the 22 customers, including the Butler Eagle offices and production center.
No publication issues arose from the water woes.
Lobaugh explained that a new water main was recently installed on West Wayne Street to replace the aging version, but supply chain issues delayed connecting customers to the new line.
Customers will be transferred onto the new line in the spring, Lobaugh said.
An alert on the Pennsylvania-American Water Company website posted Monday morning said those who reside in the area may have no water service, low pressure or cloudy water.
A map provided with the alert shows the affected area to be West Wayne Street from Beckert Avenue to Sullivan Run, meaning the main customers affected are the Butler Eagle offices and production center, and the homes facing north on West Wayne Street from Sullivan Run to Beckert Avenue.
Lobaugh said affected customers were notified of the water main break by text, phone or email via the company’s alert system.
Lobaugh encourages all customers to update their contact information so they can be alerted in the event of a water situation.
Customers can update their information by logging onto their MyWater account or calling customer service at 1-800-565-7292.
Up to three phone numbers and/or three email addresses can be added to each account, Lobaugh said.
He said Pennsylvania-American has invested about $28 million to upgrade water mains in Butler County during the past five years.
