Michigan men indicted in Hellcat thefts

A federal grand jury has indicted two Michigan men, charging them with traveling to Butler County to steal specific expensive, high-performance cars.

Dorale Leshawn Doyle, 40, of Southfield, Mich., and Ladon Richard Rogers, 39, of Allen Park, Mich., were charged with conspiracy and interstate transportation of stolen motor vehicles, according to a Tuesday news release from the Department of Justice.

U.S. Attorney Cindy K. Chung of the Western District of Pennsylvania alleges Doyle and Rogers engaged in a scheme in which they would travel from Michigan to various locations in Western Pennsylvania to steal Dodge Challenger Hellcats from Nov. 1, 2021, to Aug. 3, 2022. Two of the victimized dealerships were in Butler County.

Police received a tip July 20, 2022, from a Michigan law enforcement agency saying the pair would be targeting Hellcat model vehicles while driving in a 2004 GMC Sierra. They provided Sierra’s license plate number.

According to Kelley Blue Book, a newer model Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat can range from $68,000 to $84,000, and a Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat can range from $77,000 to $86,000.

Police said the defendants’ vehicle was spotted on July 20 passing a dealership, which had a 2019 white Hellcat on its Evans City Road lot.

Police contacted the dealership, which said the Hellcat was missing. It was recovered later that day in Southpointe, Mich., a suburb of Detroit.”

Police said Michigan law enforcement contacted them again after they spotted the Sierra heading toward Pennsylvania again.

Police said members of the Western Regional Auto Theft Task Force assembled along the turnpike and began surveying the suspects’ vehicle.

Police followed the Sierra to an Adams Township auto dealer at the intersection of Route 228 and Scharberry Lane.

“The GMC was observed circling the dealership for an extended period of time, often passing the dealership on Route 228 approximately 10 times as stationary and active surveillance was maintained,” police said.

Police said around 12:30 a.m., Doyle exited the vehicle with a black bag and walked “directly toward” the Hellcat on the lot. Police said they then witnessed him enter the vehicle.

“While (Doyle) was inside, (task force) members closed in on the male, who was observed by troopers as reaching under the passenger side compartment,” police said.

Police said Doyle was arrested at the scene, and police conducted a traffic stop on the Sierra and arrested Rogers, who was alone in the vehicle at the time.

The Western Regional Auto Theft Task Force, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Butler Township Police, Southfield Michigan Police Department, Livingston County Michigan Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police and DEA Detroit Group 15 conducted the investigation leading to the indictment, according to the news release.
