Pittsburgh man accused of theft, fraud in Jackson Township car break-ins case

A Pittsburgh man was accused Wednesday of theft and fraud following vehicle break-ins in Jackson Township that were linked to a spending spree throughout the region.

Township police charged Gary L. Denson, 47, with felonies theft, device fraud, conspiracy, prohibited possession of a firearm and four counts of misdemeanor theft following a string of incidents from over a year ago.

Police responded to multiple vehicle break-ins in the early morning of Jan. 12, 2022, in neighborhoods near Tollgate School Road. Items reported stolen were a 9 mm Springfield XDS pistol and holster, wallets, credit and debit cards, purses and more.

One of the stolen cards was used that same day at 11 a.m. for a $219 transaction in Pittsburgh, according to documents. Then, police said six more transactions were completed at various businesses in McKees Rocks.

A white Mercury Mountaineer vehicle was seen arriving and leaving from all the locations where the stolen cards were accessed, according to police. Those stores included Walgreens, Giant Eagle, Family Dollar, Rite Aid, Speedway, CVS Pharmacy and more throughout the Pittsburgh region.

Denson, as well as his wife, Lashae King, and another individual, were identified as making the transactions via surveillance footage obtained by police.

Denson and the other individuals purchased prepaid Visa cards at the various locations for $109 in value on three different occasions and gift cards in the amount of $211 on two occasions, according to documents.

Police said it was determined that Denson had used four Jackson Township residents’ cards for the transactions, totaling $643.

According to the affidavit, Monroeville and Wilkins Township police pulled over the Mercury Mountaineer for suspended registration on Feb. 28, 2022. A search warrant was obtained for the vehicle, and officers of Allegheny County and Jackson Township executed it.

Police said a firearm was located under the driver’s seat. Further investigation revealed it was previously stolen in Florida. Police also found gift cards, transactions receipts and other evidence connected to the case.

As of Wednesday, a preliminary hearing for Denson has not been scheduled.
