Cold front passes through Butler County

Temperatures still above average for January

It has been an unseasonably warm month throughout Western Pennsylvania, and even a Thursday night cold front wasn’t enough to bring temperatures down to the usual sub-20 degrees.

Bill Modzelewski meteorologist with the National Weather Service of Pittsburgh, said temperatures in the region are around nine degrees higher than average for January, but things could change by month’s end.

On Thursday, Modzelewski predicted that there would be up to 3 inches of snow accumulation by Friday morning, but it would likely not have much “staying power.”

“Average for Pittsburgh in January is 36 for an average high, average low is around 21,” Modzelewski said. “We've had a warm pattern. … Should be a little more seasonal at the end of this month.”

Modzelewski also said temperatures dropped from the mid 40s to the low 30s Thursday night into Friday morning — a pattern that likely will continue through the weekend.

“After that front goes through, temperatures should start dropping, and we should see some snow showers developing,” he said Thursday. “Our overnight low Saturday is in the 20s. If we get some snow, in most places it should hang around through Sunday. It doesn't look like we’ll have much.”
