Irene M. Green
Irene M. Green, 86, of Chicora died at 12:27 a.m. Monday in Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Butler, following an illness.
She was born in Oakland Township, the daughter of the late Alphonse L. Benson and the late Margaret E. Ryan Benson.
During World War II, she had worked at Castle Rubber in East Butler. She worked 15 years at the Moonlight Mushrooms mine in Worthington, retiring in 1982.
In 1966, she wrote a book titled "Land of the Oak," which gave the history of Oakland Township of which several copies were published. She then wrote a book about the history of Donegal Township.
She enjoyed genealogy, writing, painting pictures, sewing, reading, playing cards and crossword puzzles.
She was a member of Mater Dolorosa Roman Catholic Church of Chicora, the Altar-Rosary of the church, the Chicora Senior Center and the Fairview Township Retirees Association.
Surviving are a son, Stephen Paul Green and his wife, Kimberly Firster Green, of Butler; three daughters, Eileen Hartle of Chicora, Linda Werner of Zelienople and Sharon Zang and her husband, John, of Butler; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
She married Guy E. Green in the old St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Carbon Center, April 27, 1946; and he died July 4, 1975. As the last surviving member of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Rosalie Graham, Gertrude Graham, Agnes Green and Mary Weiland; and two brothers, Paul and Gerald Benson.
<B>GREEN</B> — Friends of Irene M. Green, who died Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at <B>STEIGHNER FUNERAL HOME</B>, 111 E. Slippery Rock and Main streets in Chicora. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Mater Dolorosa Roman Catholic Church, 409 N. Main St., Chicora, with the Rev. Joseph Pudichery, pastor, officiating.
