Mental Game

KARNS CITY — The strongest foundation for athletic success is not a statistic, but a mentality.

Steve Andreassi is confident that no matter how far his Karns City girls basketball team can go this season, its effort will not be in question.

“We have a group of girls who have a strong desire to succeed,” he said. “They work really hard ... We keep preaching intensity and they’re bringing it.”

Union felt the sting of it Friday as the host Gremlins dealt the Damsels a 46-17 defeat.

“Defensively, we were able to set the tone early on tonight,” added Andreassi.

The Gremlins went 13-10 last year, falling to Redbank Valley in a District 9 semifinal. Current sophomore point guard Brooklynn Taylor has injected energy at both ends of the floor to keep the team on pace for a return trip to postseason play. She scored 13 points Friday to match her season average, which is tied with Chloe Fritch to lead the team.
