Raiders romp Pine-Richland, 13-2

BRIDGEVILLE — Neither the lightning nor the steady rain that followed could slow down Seneca Valley.

The Raiders boys lacrosse team withstood a 95-minute lightning delay before the start of Monday’s WPIAL Division I semifinals and came out on fire, netting five first-period goals en route to a 13-2 victory over Pine-Richland at Chartiers Valley High School.

The Raiders (16-1) scored the game’s first seven goals, then followed with six more after the Rams had tallied their first goal.

“It was a collection of little plays,” said Raiders coach Peet Poillon. “The ground balls made the difference.

“It’s just the way our offense is set up. As long as we move the ball and be unselfish, we were able to possess the ball. That contributed to everyone scoring,” Poillon added.

Mike Argyros and David Hall led the way with four goals apiece, while Cole Fyock and Tanner Pfeffer added two goals each.

“We just didn’t show up,” said Pine-Richland coach Jim Vollberg. “They played a heck of a game. What helped is they had experience of being here before. We haven’t been since 2001. They came out a lot cooler and confident.”

Fyock got things started 2:02 into the game, then Pfeffer scored his first with 8:19 left in the period. A pair of Argyros goals in a 55-second span late in the period was followed up by a Hall goal with 6.2 seconds left for the five-goal lead.

“What we ending up doing is not following the game plan from the get go,” Vollberg said. “Hats off to (Seneca Valley). They played a great game.”

Things only got worse for the Rams (11-5) when Argyros and Derek Finney scored for a 7-0 advantage, before Pine-Richland got on the board when Jake Savitz found the net with 1:43 left before halftime.

But any momentum the Rams could have taken was gone after the Raiders scored six goals in a 5:11 span — the first four coming in 1:47 — for a 13-1 lead with 1:32 left in the third period, which temporarily started the running clock.

Hall registered three of those goals, while Fyock, Pfeffer and Argyros also scored.

“David Hall brings a leadership mentality,” Poillon said. “He comes to work everyday and improved in the offseason. He’s All-American caliber.

“Mike is also a guy who’s been working hard in the offseason. It’s fun to watch him with Dave and Derek,” Poillon added.

The Raiders will face the winner of today’s Mt. Lebanon-Shady Side Academy winner Friday at Chartiers Valley for the WPIAL Championship. The Blue Devils-Indians game was scheduled to start after the Raiders-Rams contest, but the lightning delay would have made the starting time a bit late.

The Raiders suffered their lone defeat of the season to Mt. Lebanon, 7-5, back on April 20. But the goal of this year’s team is to take one period at a time.

“Every 12 minutes, it’s a 0-0 game,” Poillon said. “That’s a maturity thing. The last time we played (Pine-Richland), they came back (a 9-7 Raiders win April 4). They gave us a fight. If we communicate, we’ll do well. Our defense played great tonight.”

Notes: Savitz scored the game’s final goal with one second left in the third period. ... Pfeffer added two assists while Fyock, Brady Marburger and Wendell Frank had one assist each.
