Moraine, McConnells Mills host programs
The following are programs scheduled for Moraine and McConnells Mill state parks:
1 to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 15: Winter Tree ID at Kildoo Picnic Area, McConnells Mill State Park. Learn the basics of tree identification in the winter on a guided walk through the grassy areas adjoining the picnic grounds, visiting a variety of trees and using forestry techniques and tools. Dress for the weather, snow or shine (severe weather automatically cancels event), take a drink or snack and a desire to learn. All ages are welcome for this family-friendly event.
8:30 a.m. to noon Feb. 25: Growing Up WILD Educator Workshop at Moraine State Park Region 2 Conference Room, 195 Park Road, Prospect. Registration in advance is required for this free event. This early childhood education activity guide builds on children’s sense of wonder about nature and invites them to explore wildlife and the world around them. Workshop participants will receive a copy of the newly revised guide and 3.5 Act 48 hours. The workshop is written for early childhood educators of children ages 3 to 7. Register by emailing moraineenvedsp@pa.gov or calling the park office at 724-368-8811. All adults are welcome to attend. Dress for the outdoors.
10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 4: Shiitake Mushroom Workshop at South Shore park office, 225 Pleasant Valley Road, Moraine State Park. Learn to grow shiitake mushrooms on logs in the backyard. This workshop is designed for adult beginners. Dress for the weather, and take a lawn chair. Registration in advance is appreciated. While supplies last, the first people to register will receive a small log to inoculate with shiitake during the workshop and take home. To register, use the link in the DCNR Calendar of Events.
