Cranberry Township woman charged with homicide after allegedly shooting boyfriend

Amanda M. Hughes, 26, was charged Monday, Feb. 13, with felony criminal homicide and placed in Butler County Prison without the possibility of bail.

A Cranberry Township woman has been charged with shooting and killing her boyfriend early Sunday, Feb. 12, police said.

Amanda M. Hughes, 26, was charged Monday, Feb. 13, with felony criminal homicide and placed in Butler County Prison without the possibility of bail.

According to a news release, Cranberry Township police were dispatched to Brandywine Drive for a disturbance around 12:10 a.m. Sunday. The woman caller reported she had been attacked and shot her boyfriend, Anthony D. Smith, 30, before fleeing the residence to a neighbor’s house.

When officers arrived on scene, Hughes directed them to a firearm in the driveway and said that was what she used to shoot Smith, police said.

Police found Smith inside the residence at the base of a flight of stairs with multiple gunshot wounds. Cranberry EMS transported him to UPMC Cranberry, where he was taken by medical helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital, the release said.

Smith was pronounced dead at 1:49 a.m. Sunday.

Hughes told police Smith had been punching her in the face and head prior to the shooting. According to documents, Hughes reached into her nearby purse during the attack to retrieve a pistol and fired the shots at Smith.

Police reported Hughes had bruising and swelling on the back of her right hand and a small cut and swelling under her left eye.

Hughes’ preliminary hearing before District Judge Kevin Flaherty is scheduled March 3.
