Shirley L. Rice

Shirley L. Rice, 86, of Zelienople died Tuesday at Evergreen Nursing Center, Jackson Township.

Born Nov. 29, 1918, in Evans City, she was the daughter of Charles Leroy and Ioda Pearl Barkey Garwig and the stepdaughter of Fred Green.

Mrs. Rice delivered for Meals on Wheels for 16 years, and at the age of 71, she began working for Paragon in Harmony as a sticker lady.

She was a member of the Coffee Break at Freeway Lanes in Zelienople for 15 years. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Evans City.

Surviving are three daughters, Patricia L. Pifer and her fiancé, Wayne Jacobs Sr. of Ellwood City, Carol A. White and her husband, Fred, of Harmony and Bonnie L. Peffer and her husband, Terry, of Portersville; a son, Charles L. Rice of Pittsburgh; two brothers, James A. Green of Slippery Rock and Donald Green of Evans City; and three sisters, Mrs. Cloe Yarnell of Alabama, Mrs. Bryce (Donna) Shearer of Slippery Rock, and Mrs. Lawrence (Ethel) Lloyd of Pomona, Calif. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

Her husband, Charles "Puffy" Rice, died April 9, 1982. An infant son and a grandson also preceded her in death.

RICE - Friends of Shirley L. Rice, who died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at BOYLAN FUNERAL HOME, 324 E. Grandview Ave., Zelienople. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Patrick McElroy, pastor of Park United Presbyterian Church, officiating.
