Firefighers respond to Cleveland-Cliffs plant; request called a precaution
Several fire departments were dispatched to the Cleveland-Cliffs plant at around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, for a report of a structure fire in the melt shop. However, a plant official said the request was just a precaution.
Patricia Persico, senior director of corporate communications for Cleveland-Cliffs, said dispatch was notified as a precaution for a standard procedure the plant was planning to undergo Tuesday afternoon.
“There was no fire. ... We were getting them on scene as standard procedure,” Persico said Tuesday evening. “No incident, no injuries, nothing.”
Additional units were requested in a second-alarm call from dispatch and asked to use the plant entrance at Route 8 at around 4:25 p.m.
The Butler Bureau of Fire and Butler Township Volunteer Fire District responded to the plant, and each had a firetruck standing by at the plant’s entrance for further assistance if it was deemed necessary.
The crews that were standing by were called off at around 4:45 p.m. Departments left the scene before 5:45 p.m.
