Hoagie sale supports anti-choking devices
BUTLER TWP — Each school in Butler Area School District will be supplied with new anti-choking devices thanks to the 394 hoagies sold through a fundraiser by the Junior Women’s Club of Butler.
Mary Krewduk, president of the club, said Monday, March 13 at the Bon Aire Plaza where club members distributed the hoagies that the fundraiser got a lot of attention from people involved with the district and outside of it.
“We really appreciate the community for coming out and doing this,” she said.
The group raised more than $3,000 through the hoagie sale, funding the purchase of 20 LifeVac devices. The hoagies were supplied by The Hoagie Shop, which has two locations in Butler Township, one in the Bon Aire Plaza and one in Point Plaza.
The LifeVac is a small, plunger-like device that can be used to extract obstructions via suction from a person’s throat. The devices range in price from about $70 for a travel kit to about $240 for a school kit, which comes with four units and a few different mask sizes.
The devices will be kept in the nursing offices of each school.
The Junior Women’s Club fundraiser is still active, and people can donate on the group’s website at butlerjrwomens.com.
“We’re still waiting on some large donations so we could buy more for surrounding schools,” Krewduk said.
