About 20 people walked through the Butler Art Center late Wednesday, March 15, afternoon for the Associated Artists of Butler County’s first show of the year, “Then and Now,” which features new and old pieces by artists who have displayed at the center before.

Joyce Ann Schnur, a board member of the art center, said it was “invigorating and hopeful” to see the gallery opened once again for art viewing after it had been closed through the winter because of an unexpected boiler failure.

Shirley McCauley, executive director of the center, said one of the organization’s portrait groups also met during the day Wednesday. She said many of the artists were happy to see the center reopen with a broad gallery theme.

“We have a lot of artwork from folks who had not participated in a while,” McCauley said. “A lot of them have won awards here or at other places.”

Shirley Jackson, of Butler, went to the center in the afternoon to see if she could display a painting she had made at a previous class there. She couldn’t contain her excitement.

“I’m so glad you’re open again,” Jackson said.

The “Then and Now” display will be up through April 8, and the art center will be open from noon until 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Thursdays. There will also be receptions from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 24 and from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 25.
